谢谢
xièxie
Thank you · trad. 謝謝
谢谢 (xièxie) is the everyday way to say thank you in Mandarin Chinese. It's short, natural, and appropriate in almost every situation.
When to use it
Neutral. Add 你 (nǐ) for a touch more warmth: 谢谢你. To thank someone strongly, use 非常感谢 (fēicháng gǎnxiè), “thank you very much.” When someone thanks you, reply 不客气 (bù kèqi), “you're welcome.”
How to pronounce it
Sounds like “SHYEH-shyeh.” The first 谢 is a full falling tone; the second is usually said lightly (neutral tone).
Other ways to say it
- 谢谢你xièxie nǐthank you (a bit warmer)
- 非常感谢fēicháng gǎnxièthank you very much
- 多谢duōxièthanks a lot (casual)

Pro tip: The second 谢 is normally unstressed (neutral tone) — think “XIÈ-xie,” not two heavy syllables.
