Frequently asked questions

How many provinces does China have?

Mainland China has 31 provincial-level divisions: 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 4 municipalities (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing). Hong Kong and Macau are special administrative regions.

What are the one-character abbreviations?

Each division has a one-character short name (简称, jiǎnchēng), such as 京 for Beijing or 粤 for Guangdong. You see it at the start of every car number plate and in names of trains, roads and newspapers.

What is the difference between Shanxi and Shaanxi?

They are neighbours with almost the same name: 山西 Shānxī (first tone, "west of the mountains") and 陕西 Shǎnxī (third tone, capital Xi'an). The extra "a" in Shaanxi is an English spelling convention to tell them apart.
