How seriously do people take it?
Much less than they used to. In the past a matchmaker compared the couple's full birth data, a practice called 合八字 (hé bāzì), before an engagement, and the year animal was only one part of it. Today most young people in China treat zodiac matching as small talk, in the way Western star signs are discussed. Some families still check it before a wedding, mostly to please the grandparents.
