About the pinyin in this tool
Standard readingsBased on the current Xiandai Hanyu Cidian
Where textbooks and older dictionaries disagree on a word (背包 bēibāo, for example), we follow the reading in the current standard dictionary rather than the older one.
Tone sandhi for 一 and 不Shown as actually pronounced, not as written
Before a fourth-tone syllable they become yí and bú; otherwise yì and bù (一个 → yí ge, 不是 → bú shì). Ordinals (第一) and counting sequences (一二三) stay yī.
Neutral tonesWritten without a tone mark
This covers particles (了 le, 着 zhe, 过 guo), the 不 in A-not-A questions (对不对 duì bu duì) and the 得 in potential complements (听得懂 tīng de dǒng).
ErhuaThe 儿 is shown separately as r
A word like 点儿 comes out as diǎn + r rather than being merged into one syllable.
Polyphonic charactersChosen from context automatically
Characters with several readings — 得 de / dé / děi, 行 xíng / háng, 地 de / dì — are decided from the surrounding words. In unusual contexts the choice can still be wrong.
