Where it comes from

It celebrates the legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl (牛郎织女), two lovers separated by the Milky Way who can meet only once a year, when magpies form a bridge (鹊桥) for them. In the past, girls prayed on this night for skill in weaving.

How people celebrate

  • Go on a date and exchange gifts
  • Look for the stars Vega (the Weaver Girl) and Altair (the Cowherd)
  • Tell the story of the magpie bridge
