Monday

星期一 (xīngqīyī) is the most common and standard way to say Monday in Mandarin Chinese. It literally means "week one," following a simple pattern for all days of the week.

When to use it

Neutral and widely understood. In more casual speech or written contexts, you might hear 周一 (zhōuyī). In some southern regions of China, 礼拜一 (lǐbàiyī) is also common.

How to pronounce it

Sounds like “sing-chee-EE.” The first syllable, 星期, has a high-level tone (xīng) and a high-level tone (qī); the last syllable, 一, is a high-level tone.

Other ways to say it

  • 周一zhōu yīMonday (casual / written)
