我喜欢你
wǒ xǐ huan nǐ
I like you · trad. 我喜歡你
我喜欢你 (wǒ xǐhuan nǐ) is the most common and direct way to say “I like you” in Mandarin Chinese. It can express romantic interest, but also general fondness or appreciation for a person's qualities.
When to use it
Neutral and direct. It's a common phrase for expressing affection. For stronger romantic feelings, use 我爱你 (wǒ ài nǐ, “I love you”). To express that you really like someone, you can add 很 (hěn, “very”): 我很喜欢你. When someone says this to you, a common reply might be 我也喜欢你 (wǒ yě xǐhuan nǐ, “I like you too”).
How to pronounce it
Sounds roughly like “wuh SHEE-hwahn nee.” The “wuh” and “shee” both have a dipping tone, “hwahn” is said lightly, and “nee” also has a dipping tone.
Other ways to say it
- 我很喜欢你wǒ hěn xǐ huan nǐI really like you
- 我爱你wǒ ài nǐI love you
- 我喜欢wǒ xǐ huanI like it/them (object clear from context)

Pro tip: 喜欢 (xǐhuan) is versatile; it means 'to like' and can be used for people, objects, or activities. While it can imply romantic interest, it's generally less intense than 爱 (ài, 'to love'). Also, remember tone sandhi: when multiple third tones like 我 (wǒ), 喜 (xǐ), and 你 (nǐ) appear together, their tones often change in natural speech for smoother pronunciation.
