一百
yì bǎi
100
一百 (yībǎi) is the standard way to say the number 100 in Mandarin Chinese. It's used for counting, prices, scores, and any situation where you need to refer to the quantity 100.
When to use it
Neutral. When referring to money, you often add 块 (kuài) after it, like 一百块 (yībǎi kuài) for 100 yuan. For general items, you'd use a measure word, such as 一百个 (yībǎi gè) for 100 pieces/items.
How to pronounce it
Sounds like “YEE-bye.” The character 一 (yī) changes its tone depending on the following character. Before a third tone like 百 (bǎi), it becomes a rising tone, so it's pronounced “yí bǎi.”
Other ways to say it
- 一百块yì bǎi kuàione hundred yuan (for money)
- 一百个yì bǎi gèone hundred (of general items)
- 百分之百bǎi fēn zhī bǎione hundred percent

Pro tip: Tone change: The character 一 (yī) has a special tone rule. When followed by a third tone (like 百), its tone changes from a first tone to a second tone (rising tone). So, say “yí bǎi,” not “yī bǎi.”
