✨Language Notes

Family Words — Older or Younger?

In Chinese, "brother" and "sister" each have two words depending on whether they are older or younger than you. Older brother is 哥gē哥ge, younger brother is 弟dì弟di, older sister is 姐jiě姐jie, and younger sister is 妹mèi妹mei.

①哥gē哥ge (older brother) ／弟dì弟di (younger brother)
②姐jiě姐jie (older sister) ／妹mèi妹mei (younger sister)

有yǒu (have) and 没méi有yǒu (don't have)

有yǒu means "have" or "there is." To make it negative, use 没méi有yǒu — NOT 不bù有yǒu. Always negate 有yǒu with 没méi. (Tip: don't try to guess from English spelling — use pinyin to learn the correct pronunciation!)

①我wǒ有yǒu哥gē哥ge。(I have an older brother.)
②我wǒ没méi有yǒu弟dì弟di。(I don't have a younger brother.)
