Language Notes

Family Words — Older or Younger?

In Chinese, "brother" and "sister" each have two words depending on whether they are older or younger than you. Older brother is ge, younger brother is di, older sister is jiějie, and younger sister is mèimei.

  • ge (older brother) / di (younger brother)
  • jiějie (older sister) / mèimei (younger sister)

yǒu (have) and méiyǒu (don't have)

yǒu means "have" or "there is." To make it negative, use méiyǒu — NOT yǒu. Always negate yǒu with méi. (Tip: don't try to guess from English spelling — use pinyin to learn the correct pronunciation!)

  • yǒuge。(I have an older brother.)
  • méiyǒudi。(I don't have a younger brother.)

🎮Let's Try!

👪 My Family

Try talking about your own family using "zhèshì〜。" and "yǒu〜。"

zhèshìma(This is my mom.)
yǒudi(I have a younger brother.)

yǒu? méiyǒu?

Choose the one that is true for you and say it out loud!
