05Grammar Point

Today's Grammar Point

Asking about payment: "A 还是 B" (building on Lesson 32)

When you need to confirm how a customer wants to pay, the either-or question word 还是háishi does all the work.

① 刷卡 还是 付现金?

"By card, or in cash?" The customer simply picks one: 现金xiànjīn (I'll pay cash) / 刷卡shuākǎ (I'll pay by card).

  • nín刷卡shuākǎ还是háishi现金xiànjīnWill that be card or cash?

② The checkout flow

一共yígòng日元rìyuán (the total is … yen) → payment method → zhǎonín日元rìyuán (your change) → 需要xūyào袋子dàizima? (a bag?).

Note: The amounts here are in 日元 (Japanese yen). The word 块 refers to Chinese currency, so don't use it when quoting prices in yen.
Service tip: Slip in a 请稍等 (one moment, please) whenever you need a beat — it keeps the checkout calm and unhurried. Cashless options such as 扫码支付 (QR-code payment) are covered in Lesson 67.

06Practice

  1. Say the total using the pattern 一共〇〇日元 ("the total is … yen").一共一千五百日元
  2. Ask how the customer would like to pay: 「nín刷卡shuākǎ还是háishi现金xiànjīn?」
  3. With a partner, role-play a full checkout: total → payment → change → bag.
