学习短语 (xuéxí duǎnyǔ) means "to learn phrases" in Mandarin Chinese. It's used when you want to talk about acquiring ready-made expressions and common sayings, which is a very effective way to improve fluency in a new language.
When to use it
Neutral and widely applicable. You can use it in both formal and informal contexts. For a slightly more casual feel, you can often just say 学短语 (xué duǎnyǔ), omitting the '习'. If you want to emphasize memorization, you might use 记住短语 (jìzhù duǎnyǔ).
How to pronounce it
Sounds roughly like "shweh-SHEE DWAHN-yoo." The '习' in 学习 is a rising second tone. For '短语', the first '短' (a third tone) shifts to a rising second tone, so it's pronounced like 'DWAHN-yoo'.
