Today's Grammar Point
The measure word 位 wèi — counting people politely
When counting guests, use the respectful measure word 位 instead of the ordinary 个.
① 几位?/两位
To ask "How many in your party?" say 您几位?; the answer is 两位 (two people). "Two people" is 两位 (never 二位). Before a measure word, use 两 (see Lesson 4).
- 我们三位。There are three of us.
- 这位先生this gentleman
Note: for counting guests, say 两位・三位… — never 二位.
Service tip: To check a reservation, ask 您有预约吗?; if you're full, say 抱歉,现在没有空位,您能等…吗? to politely ask guests to wait.
06Practice
- Answer "您几位?" with a number of people (两位/三位/四位).
- With a partner, act out the full sequence: welcome → ask the party size → check the reservation → show the guests to their table.
- Practice telling guests the restaurant is full: "抱歉,现在没有位子".
