05Grammar Point

Grammar Point

Polite service language: 您 and 请 / the measure word 位

When serving customers, always address them with nín (the respectful "you"), and soften any request with qǐng.

① 您 and 请 transform the impression you make

Choose nín over , and qǐng + verb over a bare command. These two small changes instantly make you sound polished and professional.

  • nínwèiHow many in your party? (more polite than 你几个?)
  • qǐngshāoděngOne moment, please.

② 位 — the polite measure word for people

Count your guests with wèi. "Two guests" is 两位 (not 二位). We will review this again in Lesson 46.

Note: avoid 你 with customers and use instead — the same spirit of respect as greeting a teacher with 老师好.
Service tip: 您需要帮忙吗? (May I help you?) and 您慢慢看 (Please take your time) are classic phrases for attentive service that never feels pushy.

06Practice

  1. Greet an arriving customer with 欢迎光临!您好!
  2. Practice offering "nín需要xūyào帮忙bāngmángma?" and asking "nínwèi?" out loud.
  3. In pairs, act out the flow from welcome to showing the way (欢迎光临→您需要帮忙吗→这边请).
