你打字
nǐ dǎ zì
You type

你打字 (nǐ dǎzì) is a simple statement meaning "you type" or "you are typing." It describes someone's action of typing on a keyboard or phone.

When to use it

Neutral. To emphasize the ongoing action, use 你在打字 (nǐ zài dǎzì), "you are typing." To ask "Can you type?", use 你会打字吗? (nǐ huì dǎzì ma?).

How to pronounce it

Sounds roughly like "NEE DAH-dzuh." The first syllable "NEE" is a rising tone, the second "DAH" is a low, dipping tone, and the third "DZUH" is a sharp falling tone.

Other ways to say it

  • 你在打字nǐ zài dǎ zìyou are typing (emphasizes ongoing action)
  • 你会打字nǐ huì dǎ zìyou can type (emphasizes ability)
  • 你打字很快nǐ dǎ zì hěn kuàiyou type very fast (describes skill)

Examples

你打字,我来读。
nǐ dǎ zì , wǒ lái dú 。
You type, I'll read.
他打字很慢,我打字很快。
tā dǎ zì hěn màn , wǒ dǎ zì hěn kuài 。
He types very slowly, I type very fast.
老师说,请你打字。
lǎo shī shuō , qǐng nǐ dǎ zì 。
The teacher said, please type.
Pro tip: Tone change: when two third-tones meet, the first one changes to a rising tone. So, 你打字 is pronounced "Ní dǎzì," not "Nǐ dǎzì."
